A “Whole You” Individualized Approach to Nutrition

In its essence, an individualized approach to nutrition means looking at the unique needs of the entire person, as they embark on the journey towards better health. Typically, whole foods and supplements, when necessary, are used in order to help to rebuild and balance the whole person. With an awareness of how dietary choices are interrelated with the condition of the body, emotions, and the environment, the focus of holistic care is on preventing illness. The needs of the individual are addressed with the understanding that prevention is the best way to maintain health and wellness, long term. At the seat of good nutrition is a whole foods based diet, which for most people, includes whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits at the foundation; special diets and supplements are also used and integrated as needed to meet the unique health needs of the individual.

In certain health conditions, a biomedical nutrition approach to healing may be more appropriate. Like holistic nutrition, a biomedical approach gets to the root of a person’s symptoms with the goal of resolving the underlying problem. Good health begins with a healthy digestive tract which, if compromised, can allow the entry of certain “toxins”, leading to the growth of intestinal pathogens and causing poor digestion & absorption, inflammation, and a host of other symptoms, such as compromised body detoxification. A combination of nutritional supplementation, detoxification support, dietary changes and an individualized approach to healing can lead one back on the path to health and wellness.
